-
Keep the heat in with cavity wall insulation and you could save £115 every year off your heating bill and solid wall insulation could save you £400 per year.
-
Install 270mm of loft insulation (if you don’t have any already) to save you around £150 per year.
-
Fit your hot water tank with a lagging jacket at least 7cm (3") thick to save around £35 a year. Your hot water cylinder thermostat should be set at 60 degrees C – to kill bacteria such as Legionella, it does not need to be set higher as this does not kill more bacteria, but it might scold your hands!
-
Don't leave appliances on standby or on charge unnecessarily and this could save as much as £37 per year.
-
Switch lights off when you leave the room and use energy saving light bulbs. Energy saving bulbs will save you around £3 a year per light (it adds up...)
-
Wash clothes at 30 degrees C rather than higher temperatures to save around 40% of energy. Most detergents work just as effectively at 30 degrees C.
-
Look for the Energy Saving Recommended logo; Energy Saving Recommended appliances could save a household £30 on average.
