Saving water, saving energy
Supplying our homes with 1.3 billion litres of treated drinking water every day uses significant amounts of energy. Additional energy is used when heating water for baths, washing-up and boiling water; working out at around 30% of an average household heating bill, working out at around £200 a year. By wasting less hot water you can cut down on your carbon footprint and save money.
Simple tips to save water:
- Every minute cut from your daily shower could save up to £10 off your energy bills each year.
- Fit a water butt to store rainwater from your roof for washing the car and watering the garden.
- Try and Use a bucket and sponge instead of a hose when washing the car to use 90% less water
- Use a washing up bowel rather than rinsing under the tap to save £25 a year on your gas bill.
- Install a cistern displacement device in your toilet – these are available free of charge from your water company and reduces the volume of water used in each flush by 1 – 3 litres.
- A running tap wastes 6 litres of water, a minute. Turn it off.
