Reducing waste

Every year, tons of materials that could be recycled or composted end up rotting in landfills. Biodegradable waste breaks down to produce methane which contributes to climate change.

The Energy Saving Trust has teamed up with WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) to show a few easy ways you can cut household waste and make more of the things you buy:

  • Every UK household wastes around £50 a month throwing away food that could have been eaten. Get into the habit of using up leftovers and you’ll see more money in your pocket than in the bin. See lovefoodhatewaste.com

  • Hate junk mail? Register with the Mail Preference Service and have your name removed from direct mail lists.

  • Recycle waste from all the rooms in the house, not just the kitchen.

  • Buy a compost bin and use the nutrient rich compost on the garden. For more information visit Why Compost? on Recycle Now.

  • Around 30% of an average household bin can be composted at home. Use a container or kitchen caddy and it will save you making a daily trip to the compost bin.

  • Reuse plastic bags when you can or use a canvas bag or rucksack for shopping trips.
